Sonifications of the Universe (and more)

Mark Ballora

November 2 to December 12

During this residency, data sets describing a variety of natural phenomena will be displayed assound. This project explores how sound can envelop viewers, creating a visceral experience thatis not possible to achieve when looking at imagery alone. Ballora will extend his workleveraging the sensitivity of the auditory system to subtle auditory patterns, opening up thepossibility that science can be experienced as music, and thus understood in new ways.

The project will begin with a display of sonifications of hurricanes. Over the course of theresidency, these will be expanded upon and joined with sonifications of cosmologicalphenomena and animal life.
